What do we do? NLGBA Aims
We are still very active as advocates for LGB people through our equality campaign and awareness raising work in the county and in recent years we have been improving and expanding the services which we provide directly to our members and the wider community. Within the range of services we currently offer you will find an information and support service covering a wide range of issues that affect LGB people’s lives including referral to counsellors and other organisations as required. SNAP is our men’s sexual health project which provides everything you need to know about sexual health including HIV and AIDS as well as free condoms and lube. Our exciting new e-volution project exists to help LGB people learn new skills, continue education and find employment. If you’re under 19 we have a dedicated Connexions worker to help you take the next step concerning work or study. By providing training and consultancy to local businesses and organisations such as the Police and the County Council we try to ensure that LGB people are treated fairly and appropriately in the workplace and when they access services. And let’s not forget the GayLine and LesbianLine Collective which are still going strong but have now evolved into weekly social groups which meet across the county providing safe, friendly meeting spaces for LGB people and those questioning their sexuality. We often receive enquiries from Transexual/Transgender (Trans) clients and while we are not constitutionally bound to support these clients we try to do everything that we can to assist and can refer people on to specialist Trans organisations and groups as required. We are also receiving increasing numbers of enquiries from family and friends of LGB people, particularly parents of LGB children or parents who are LGB themselves. Again we are very happy to offer support and advice to people in these situations.
