Holocaust Memorial Day – 27th January 2005 : Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps

The 60th anniversary of the liberation of the extermination and concentration camps presents one of the greatest opportunities to show our respect for the survivors of Nazi persecution and mass murder, and to listen to what they can tell us about the best and the worst of human behaviour.

Holocaust Memorial Day is about commemorating all the communities who suffered as a result of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution which included lesbians and gay men, and demonstrating that the Holocaust is relevant to everyone in the UK today. The day provides a focus – through the national event and local events – for people to think about the continuing repercussions of the Holocaust on our society.

As well as being a way of remembering those who suffered during the Holocaust, it is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness and educate others on aspects of persecution and discrimination, such as: genocide, racism, homophobia and disablism.

The theme for the 2005 event is Survivors, Liberation and Rebuilding Lives. You can read the theme paper that was written by Prof. David Cesarani of Royal Holloway, University of London, by clicking the link below.
