LGBT History Month

This February marks the 2nd LGBT History Month, an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. While the government has welcomed LGBT History Month, its origins lie with the grass roots.

The idea came from School’s Out!, a campaigning organisation of LGBT people involved in education. They took their inspiration partly from the US, where LGBT History Month has been celebrated since 1994. They also make respectful acknowledgement to the example of Black History Month.

LGBT people have often hidden themselves in society for their own safety and frequently been ignored by others for their achievements and contributions. As a result it has been easy for others to stereotype and distort the reality of their lives. From this ignorance comes the prejudice that shows itself in homophobic bullying, negative discrimination and victimisation. By presenting an honest appraisal of LGBT lives it is hoped that ignorance be replaced with knowledge and understanding.

NLGBA is supporting LGBT History Month with an exhibition documenting the experiences of LGBT people in Nazi Germany.
