Andrew Bewers, an NLGBA founding member and volunteer of 13 years - currently NLGBA’s Director of Operations - has been ceremoniously awarded a Silver ‘Unsung Heroes’ award by Northamptonshire Police Authority in recognition of his dedication and commitment to equalities and anti discriminatory practice.

This coveted award recognises the significant contribution Andrew has made in adding value to the lives of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people in Northamptonshire. This follows a series of awards over the years that NLGBA staff and volunteers have been given - The Chief Executive, Stuart McQuade, was awarded in 2002 a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.) for his equalities work and Chairman, Dr Ian McCormick has been cited for a Queen Elizabeth the 2nd honour by Northamptonshire County Council.

John Gillick of Spectrum, the County’s LGB Police Association, who nominated Andrew said

“We had no hesitation in putting Andrew forward for this award as he has ‘quietly’ volunteered for all of these years in making a real difference for LGB folk in our County, acting as Treasurer, help line operator, events organiser and Executive Committee Member at NLGBA."

The event hosted by Northamptonshire Police Force’s Chief Constable Peter Maddison and Police Authority Chair Dr Marie Dickie was attended by several hundred Northants people at the Force HQ where more than 40 citizens who have acted above and beyond the call of duty in terms of good citizenship and voluntary activity in making Northamptonshire a safer and stronger community for all including the LGB community.

Andrew said

“I am greatly honoured to have received this commendation but this award belongs to a team of people who over the years have worked to make NLGBA an identified centre of excellence locally, regionally and nationally – so I can only accept it in acknowledging the contribution of so many other individuals who have worked to achieve a common purpose”.

Stuart McQuade – NLGBA Chief Executive said:

“Andrew was out of the Country on the evening of the Oscar style ceremony and I was delighted to accept the award on his behalf in his absence. He has been a long standing friend and colleague and I cannot think of a person more deserving – his tenacity for doing what are often the less interesting and noticeable tasks have made NLGBA a strong and robust organisation and ultimately have improved the lives of countless LGB people in our County”.
