As probably the first Council sponsored Civil Partnerships Fair in the
country, the event was a great success, both in terms of the commitment
and energy from the many service providers present, to the positive message
that has gone out to the LGB communities of this County about the non-discriminatory
approach same sex couples will receive in planning their big day.
Among feedback so far is that lots of people said that they had good networking
with each other as stallholders as well as with the visitors to the event.
Others said they had a good time generally. It was noted that a number
mentioned they loved the 'feel good' feeling and how supportive and kind
companies were being to one another: A celebratory cake was
contributed for free to be shared around, as was dunking marshmallows
in the chocolate fountain! It was also realised by many what an asset
the Guildhall is itself as a building, and they'd not realised how good
the hire prices are.

The Borough Council now have a local service providers booklet, copies
with NLGBA. This is available to any couple wishing to check out for themselves
the companies that have shown a real commitment to civil partnerships.
The County Registration Service have also produced a delightful booklet
bringing together a selection of readings and poetry suitable for Civil
Partnerships. Go to www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/registration
The Borough Council have indicated that, in partnership, they expect this
fair to become an annual event.
Northampton Borough Council's LGB People's forum are holding their first
Civil Partnerships & Weddings Fair to be held at The Guildhall, Northampton
10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 4th November 2006.
This is a chance to meet local service providers who can help you in preparing
for your civil partnership or wedding, including the registrar's office
staff. You can also find out more about civil partnerships, local services
and see some of the beautiful function rooms available in Northampton's
historic Guildhall.
Just some of the participating service providers are wedding car providers
(look out for 2 special cars in the courtyard of the Guildhall), costume
and outfitter companies, photographers, cake specialists, travel company,
venues for receptions and hotel accommodation, a beauty therapist who
has offered to provide demonstrations at the event, harp and flute players
who will be performing during the event, plus the bar will be open for
drinks in the Court Room.
All the companies taking part have also contributed to a new information
resource which will be launched at the event. Copies of which will also
be available from NLGBA. The information is from local companies who were
surveyed and asked to give the LGB community information about themselves
and services that can help people who are organising or attending a civil
partnership event.
Admission is free and there will be some speakers earlier in the morning,
but the event is a drop-in format.
