Social Group Review

Over the last couple of months the Social Group Review Team has met on a number of occasions. They have considered feedback from the pilot initiatives that were run during August, plus of course the results of the consultation exercise that provided an opportunity for all members to input into the way forward in terms of social space provided by NLGBA.

At a recent NLGBA Executive meeting, the headlines recommended by the Review Team, which had already been presented to Members at the Special General Meeting, were endorsed, with a commitment to increase staffing capacity to ensure that all social activities provided directly by NLGBA are appropriately managed.

The key recommendations of the Review are as follows:

  • A regularly updated, posted and emailed diary and reminder of all social activities is provided on a regular basis. The website will be maintained regularly.
  • That the Monday Chill ‘n’ Chat sessions with a mix of topical speakers and diverse focussed evenings continue.
  • That any independent groups continue to be supported and well advertised by NLGBA.
  • That Ortons Drop In continues on Saturdays providing a weekend safe space.
  • That the Lesbian Social Group continues in Northampton on Wednesday evenings.
  • That a Youth Group for young LGBT people be run and managed via Connexions.
  • That two regular initiatives be launched in Northampton from January 2006, to include a safe space for those just coming out, and an additional week day evening space for those older and more community aware.
  • That larger scale annual events are organised subject to staffing capacity, volunteers and budget e.g Pink Picnic, PRIDE etc.
  • That satellite opportunities covering locations outside Northampton are provided. Initially Corby GayLine will recommence on Monday 14th November 2005, with one meeting a month. This will be supplemented by other groups on a rotation basis around the County.

NLGBA Executive is committed to ensuring that safe and appropriate space is provided to meet the needs of as many of its Members, and others identifying as Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual or coming to terms with their sexuality, as possible.
