Northants Police have issued the following advice on personal safety whilst cruising - 'Safer Cruising' - Personal Safety Advice

Homophobic Assault – Boston Clipper Thursday 1st November 2007

The Police Hate Crime Unit is currently investigating an assault by at least two attackers between the times of 11.40pm and 12.30am into Friday 2nd November 2007.

The victim appears to have been targeted whilst in the pub on his own, and having had a few drinks. One male chatted to the victim for some time then both went outside, accessing the churchyard at the rear of the Clipper. At this stage the victim is attacked by at least two assailants. It is assumed that this second attacker was “laying in wait”

The victim was knocked to the ground, and sustained cuts & bruises, but did not require hospitalisation. The victim returned to the pub to report the incident. There is no evidence at this stage of the attack being for reasons other than homophobic, although this cannot be ruled out.

The Police are seeking any potential witnesses to the incident, and in the meantime are urging anyone accessing the rear of the Boston Clipper to be cautious and mindful that the area is without lighting, and is not covered by CCTV.

If you do have any information please contact Andrew at NLGBA, or the Hate Crime Unit direct on 08453 700700 ext 2664

The following press release was issued by the Gay Police Association on 25th May 2005.

Fraudsters Target Gay Chat Rooms

The Gay Police Association is today warning users of chat rooms to be on the look out following a number of reports that popular gay chat rooms are being targeted by fraudsters. This a new development of the Nigerian based e-mail fraud where people in the UK are asked for money or their bank details; the fraudsters latest tactic is to engage people in conversation in the chat rooms before requesting money. People, often claiming to be dying of cancer or involved in charity work, have been logging into gay chat rooms in an attempt to gain money or the bank details of people in the UK

Ian Saunders, Community Advisor of The Gay Police Association said,

"Many people are familiar with receiving e-mails from people based in Nigeria asking for money and are now wise to this fraud, but it is much easier to be taken in by someone if you have spent some time chatting with them on-line. People using gay chat rooms need to be aware that fraudsters are now targeting them and to treat with caution any requests for money or bank details from people they have recently chatted to."

He continued,

"The Gay Police Association is working in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad on this issue and our advice to people who suspect they may be being targeted in this way is to forward the e-mails with headers to fraud.alert@met.police.uk and to the abuse team at the internet service supplier of the suspect e-mail e.g. abuse@yahoo.com or abuse@hotmail.co.uk Anyone who has sent money and believes they may have been the victim of a fraud should contact their local Police in order that the matter can be investigated. "
